Manhattan Samba is New York’s longest-standing Brazilian bateria – a high-energy samba drum ensemble in the heart of Manhattan.
Time Out New York Magazine alliteratively singled out Manhattan Samba as the NYC group that "bombards your brain and booty with a battery of bumpin' Brazilian batucada beats."
Founded in 1990 by Ivo Araújo and Amy Duncan, Manhattan Samba has been a major act on New York City’s dance floors for over two decades.
Its mission is to inspire fitness, leadership and community through Samba-Enredo. It is accessible to people of all ages and abilities, and introduces Brazilian carnival culture to everyone interested.
Many people playing together is joyful as well as challenging. Manhattan Samba is a space for creativity, channeled through arrangements and improvisation.
At weekly rehearsals, Manhattan Samba is striving to achieve sonic oneness as a group, and to be a platform for each member to build individual talent.
